Lance Naik Sham Singh served in the 32nd Mountain Battery in Egypt & Palestine, where he was awarded the Indian Distinguished Service Medal. The article ‘Murree and Poonch Mountain Batteries in the 1918 Palestine Campaign’ by Colonel P. K. Gautam (Retd.), records the details of the award, taken from the Battery Records of the 32nd (Poonch) Mountain Battery: ‘19 September 1918 - Ration party came under fire and our logistics wagon team was hit. One Egyptian driver, one horse and one mule killed. L/Nk Shan Singh riding the lead mule gallantly cut out the horses which were wounded.’
