Netherlandish (late 16th century), The Triumph of Poverty, bronze plaquette, figures of Indigence, Humility and Fear on a cart drawn by a pair of exhausted and starving horses and accompanied by three stooped women; in the background a fortified church, 66 x 127mm (Weber 678.5; Warren, Ashmolean, 510), extremely fine contemporary cast, unusually sharp Ex Alain Edrei (1931-2021) collection [inventory number 62 in red on reverse]. From a series of thirteen Triumphs by an unknown artist, this one based on an engraving by Cornelis Cort, after Maerten van Heemskerck (Warren, Ashmolean, fig. 410).
