Description

Army Long Service and Good Conduct (2), V.R., 2nd Issue, large letter reverse (610. Tp. Serjt. Major Patk Nugent, 9th Lancers); and E.VII.R. (2556 Pte. G. Grant. Middx: Regt.), the first with traces of former ‘claw type’ mount at edge, some associated marks and loss of naming, suspension re-fixed, good fine thus; the second once lacquered, otherwise good very fine (2) Troop Sergeant Major Nugent, of Keady, near Newton Hamilton, Armagh, was born c.1820 and enlisted for service with the 9th Lancers at Newry on 10 August 1838. After a troublesome start, during which he twice deserted and rejoined, he thereafter led an impressive career. Having taken part in the Battle of Punniar (entitled to the bronze star), he was promoted to Corporal for gallantry at Sobraon, where having had his horse shot from beneath him, he immediately fell in with the ranks of the 50th Regiment and ‘gallantly entered the enemy entrenchment’. Present later at Chilianwala and Goojerat (medal with 2 clasps) and serving in the Indian Mutiny (medal with 3 clasps) he was severely wounded in the hip on 8 June 1857 at the battle of Badli-ke-Serai. Discharged in Dublin in April 1865, he was appointed to the Yeomen of the Guard in 1866, and died on 23 May 1892. Ex Paul Denny Collection, D.N.W., 9 May 2015, lot 835.Private G. Grant is confirmed as having served with the 2nd Battalion, Middlesex Regiment, during the Second Anglo-Boer War (Q.S.A. with 4 clasps, and 2 clasp K.S.A.).
