Sicily, Syracuse, tetradrachm, c. 410-405 BC, signed K (Kimon?), quadriga driven left with Nike above crowning the charioteer; in ex., corn stalk, rev., head of Arethusa right with four dolphins around; behind head, tiny retrograde K, 17.01g, die axis 3.00 (Tudeer/Fischer Bossert 64b, this coin; BMC 222, same dies), toned, very fine and very rare. Provenance: Hermitage duplicates sale, Schlessinger 13, 1935, lot 359 and Gillet collection (inventory no. 633). One of only three examples recorded by Tudeer and subsequently by Fischer Bossert. A further example in corroded condition was in the Bertolami sale, 11 January 2016, lot 228. The central die crack showing on the cheek of Arethusa probably indicates that the die broke at an early stage, hence the rarity of the coins struck from it
