Description

Syracuse. Decadrachm, unsigned dies in the style of Euainetos circa 405-367, AR 37 mm, 42.14 g. Fast quadriga driven l. by charioteer, holding reins and kentron; in field above, Nike flying r. to crown him. In exergue, display of military harness set on two steps and [AΘΛA]. Rev. [ΣΥ – Ρ – Α – Κ – ΟΣΙΩΝ] Head of nymph Arethusa (Kore-Persephone) l., wearing barley-wreath, triple pendant earring and beaded necklace; in l. field, [pellet] and in r. field, shell. Around, three dolphins, while a fourth makes dorsal contact with neck truncation. SNG ANS 374 (this reverse die). SNG Blackburn 187 (these dies). Gallatin dies R.XXIII/F.IXa.

Old cabinet tone, usual die rust on obverse. Heavily tooled and surface altered, otherwise good very fine
