The kings of Kent Heaberht and Ecgberht were the first Anglo-Saxon rulers to strike broad flan pennies following the Carolingian reform of 771. Those of Ecgberht are the earliest available to collectors. The example offered here is the only known penny that correctly renders the king's name: ECGBERHT.
