★ Byzantine lead seal of Ouranios officer ★
Byzantine lead seal of Ouranios officer
(6th/7th cent.).
A unique seal with rarest early iconographical depictions!
Obverse: In the center three facial busts of saints in columnar form, most probably above Jesus Christ, below the Mother of God and third another saint, flanked by an angel in either side, no visible border.
Reverse: Block monogram, resolved with much cetainty as OVPANIOV = Οὐρανίου (of Ouranios, the owner of the seal), no visible border.
Commentary: The Greek name Ouranios means heavenly and perhaps that's why the owner of the present seal chose to depict a heavenly scene on the obverse of his seal!
