Hârûn al-Rashîd, 171-193 H./786-809 AD.
Silver San’ânî Dirham 178 H., San’â’. Name of the governor of the Yemen, Muhammad ibn Ibrâhîm. 1,24g. Lowick/Savage 540; Artuk, Denizbaci Hoard 476.
Very rare. About very fine.
The San’ânî dirham was a regional currency of the Yemen struck from 171 H. onwards beginning with a weight of 1.3 g, thus a bit less than half of the legal (shar’î) dirham of 2.97 g. Their weight standard of this regional coinage was systematically reduced over the following two hundred years and accordingly the older coins were clipped to adjust to the standard of the time of circulation. With 1.24 g this is an unclipped coin, which is not common on top of the rarity of the type.
