Five Guineas, 1668. First laureate bust right, Latin legend with pellet stops surrounding, CAROLVS. II. DEI. GRATIA. translates as “Charles II by the Grace of God” toothed border surrounding / Crowned cruciform emblematic shields, emblematic sceptres in angles, four interlinked C’s at the centre, date either side of top crown, abbreviated Latin legend, .MAG. BR. FRA. ET. HIB. REX. translates as “King of Great Britain, France and Ireland” toothed border surrounding, edge inscribed in raised letters DECVS ET TVTAMEN ANNO REGNI VICESIMO PRIMO the regnal year for 1669, translates as “An ornament and a safeguard, in the twenty first year of the reign”. 41,62g. NGC AU DETAILS OBV REPAIRED (2113951-015) Struck on a broad flan, surface marks both sides, very fine.

GH : 11 specimens known. Engraved by John Roettier, this obverse is much rarer than the obverse with the elephant. Bearing the edge year for 1669, this coin is therefore evidence that the elephant type Five Guineas of 1668 was struck before the non-elephant variety.
