Kings of Macedon
Alexander III ‘the Great’, 336-323 BC. Stater (Gold, 17 mm, 8.58 g, 11 h), struck under Philip III Arrhidaios, Sardes, c. 322-319/8. Head of Athena to right, wearing Corinthian helmet adorned with serpent. Rev. ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ Nike standing left, holding wreath in her right hand and stylis in her left; in the field to left, ΤΙ above bee. Price 2624 = Thompson, Sardes, XIV 225a (same dies). With a beautifully engraved head of Athena obverse of unusually fine style. Apparently only the second known example of this issue. The reverse softly struck from a worn die, otherwise, extremely fine.
