SATRAPS OF CARIA. Pixodaros, circa 341/0-336/5 BC. Didrachm (Silver, 20 mm, 6.94 g, 12 h), Halikarnassos. Laureate head of Apollo facing slightly to right, with the ends of his cloak fixed around his neck with an oval clasp. Rev. ΠΙΞΩΔΑΡΟΥ Zeus Labraundos standing right, holding double-headed axe (labrys) in right hand over right shoulder, and long scepter in left. Pixodarus -. SNG Keckman 280. With a remarkably emotive, even stern head of Apollo, with a truly masculine look, rather than a simply elegant one. An exceptional example. Good very fine.
