★ Aige in Pallene? ★
MACEDON. Aige in Pallene. 500-480 BC. Tritetartemorion (Silver, 8 mm, 0.51 g). Forepart of goat to right, head turned backwards. Rev. Quadripartite incuse square of mill sail design. Tsintsifos 8 (as Pergamos). Lightly toned. Very fine.
The reverse die used to strike this coin is extremely close to the ones used in the contemporary tetradrachms of Mende. This issue is usually placed in the Thraco-Macedonian region, but if an attribution is to be made, then a mint in the Chalkidiki region is certainly preferable. Mende could be a possibility, but the obverse is clearly far away from the standard imagery for the city. DG.
