Marcian, 450-457. Solidus (Gold, 20 mm, 4.48 g, 6 h), Constantinople, Γ = 3rd officina. D N MARCIA-NVS P F AVG Helmeted, diademed and cuirassed bust of Marcian facing, holding spear over his right shoulder and with shield, over his left, ornamented with a horseman spearing a fallen foe. Rev. VICTORIA AVGGG / CONOB Victory standing to left, holding long jeweled cross with her right hand; in field to right, star. Depeyrot 87/1. MIRB 5b. RIC 510. Lustrous, sharp and attractive. Virtually as struck.
Due to the miscalculation of the available space by the engraver, the second "A" of the obverse inscription was squeezed into Marcian's helmet crest: it almost appears to be part of the helmet plumes rather than a letter.
