Description

SICILY. Syracuse. Second Democracy, 466-405 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 24.5 mm, 17.03 g, 9 h), c. 430-420. Charioteer driving a quadriga walking to right; above Nike flying right to crown the horses. Rev. ΣVPΑΚΟΣΙΟΝ Head of Arethusa to right, wearing double-loop earring and necklace, and with her hair bound with a cord and tied in a large knot at the back of her head; around, two opposed pairs of dolphins. AMB 450 ( same dies ). Boehringer Series XXII, 666 (V337/R455). Pozzi 588 ( same dies ). SNG ANS 218 ( same dies ). Lovely head of Arethusa. The obverse die a little worn, otherwise, very fine.
