Description

Diva Faustina Senior, died 140/1. Denarius (Silver, 18 mm, 3.15 g, 6 h), struck under her husband, Antoninus Pius, Rome, 141-161. DIVA FAVSTINA Diademed and draped bust of Faustina to right, her hair in a bun bound with pearls at the top of her head. Rev. AETER-NITAS Peacock standing to right before throne with scepter leaning against it. BMC 3843 ( Antoninus Pius ). Cohen 61. RIC 353 ( Antoninus Pius ). Minor deposits, otherwise, good very fine.

According to Aesop, a peacock petitioned the goddess Juno for the voice of a nightingale, but Juno refused his request, saying: “Be content with your lot; one cannot be first in everything.” Anyone who has raised or been around peacocks will understand. Although they have some of the most incredible plumage of any bird, they do make a terrible noise that can make one's hair stand on end.
