Description

★ With a pedigree going back to 1888! ★

Divus Augustus, died AD 14. Sestertius (Orichalcum, 34 mm, 26.98 g, 6 h), struck under Tiberius, Rome, 22-23. DIVVS AVGVSTVS PATER Divus Augustus, radiate and draped, but with chest bare, seated left on throne, holding laurel branch in his right hand and long scepter with his left; to left, altar. Rev. TI CAESAR DIVI AVG F AGVST P M TR POT XXIIII around large S C. BMC 74 (Tiberius). BN 50 (Tiberius). Cohen 309. RIC 49 (Tiberius). Slightly rough but attractive dark brown and green patina. Some roughness and traces of cleaning , otherwise, about extremely fine.
From the collection of W. F. Stoecklin, Amriswil, Switzerland, bought from Dr. H. Nussbaum in Zürich, and from the collections of Sir A. Evans, Ars Classica XVII, 3 October 1934, 1182 and that of A. de Belfort, Hoffmann, 20 February 1888, 159 .
