SELEUKID KINGS OF SYRIA. Antiochos III ‘the Great’, 223-187 BC. (Bronze, 21 mm, 10.41 g, 12 h), unattributed eastern issue. Diademed head of Antiochos III to right. Rev. BΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΑΝΤΙΟΧΟΥ Apollo seated left on omphalos, testing arrow held in right hand and and holding bow resting on ground with left. HGC 9, 498 (R3). ESM -. SC 1286. Dark green patina. Very fine.
From the Thomas Kirby Collection, USA.
The bevelling along the obverse of the flan and the similarity of the types to bronzes struck at Ekbatana suggest that this issue was probably struck there as well (cf. SC 1248), yet, it lacks the controls on the reverse which would secure its attribution.
