Antoninus Pius, 138-161. Denarius (Silver, 16 mm, 3.35 g, 6 h), Rome, 153-154 (?). ANTONINVS AVG PIVS P P TR P XVI-I ( numeral uncertain ) Laureate head of Antoninus Pius to right. Rev. COS IIII Annona standing left, holding grain ears in her right hand and resting her left on a modius set on a low altar behind her to right. BMC 809. Cohen 291. RIC 231. A pleasing coin with a fine portrait and an attractive toning. Rare, with the slightly garbled legend. Extremely fine.
The date of this coin is not quite certain because the die cutter seems to have had quite some trouble with the letters at the end of the obverse inscription. Initially it looks like it might be either VII or VII-I, but since those dates are unknown – and the head seems stylistically later in the reign, rather than earlier, we suggest that it should be TR P XVII.
