GREEK COINS
THELEVANT or ARABIA
Uncertain. Mid to late 4th century (or later). Trihemiobol (?) (Silver, 7mm, 0.96 g 12). Female (?) head to right, wearing very schematic helmet or headdress. Rev. ΑΘΕ Owl with closed wings, wide open eyes and prominent claws to right, head facing; to left, olive sprig. No known parallel . Clearly and sharply struck. Most attractive in a curious way. Extremely fine. From a European collection. This is a very enigmatic coin. Many imitation Athenian obols are known, often from the Levant, Gaza or the Philisto-Arabian area; this specific type, with the very oddly made helmet or headdress, seems to be otherwise unpublished.
