The Dutch Republic. Middelburg . Medal (Silver, 43.5mm, 29 g 12), on the investiture of Wilhelm Momma as Preacher in Middelburg, by M. Hooft, 1676. W.MOMMA.ECCLES.MIDD. S.THEOL DOCT.ET.PROF Draped bust of Momma to left; on the truncation, ÆTA.33.M.HOOFT.F. Rev. Laudatory inscription in 9 lines. Rare. Attractively toned. Extremely fine. Ex Baldwin’s 55, 7 May 2008, 2708. Wilhelm Momma was a theologian who was born in Hamburg and worked most of his life (1642-1677) in Germany. He studied in Leiden and was ultimately made preacher in Middelburg. Due to doctrinal disputes he was forced out in early 1677; he then moved on to Delft, where he died in September of that year.
