Description

MACEDON. Aphytis. Circa 450 BC. Triobol (Silver, 10.5 mm, 1.93 g). Kantharos on a high stem; in the field to right, three pellets. Rev. Irregular incuse square. Cf. AMNG III,2 pl. XXVI, 19 and BMFA 2317 = Regling, Warren, 1407 for a similar piece, possibly struck from the same reverse die, but the kantharos has higher handles and the weights are slightly lower, otherwise apparently unpublished. Traité II, 4, 1031 var. = pl. CCCXVII, 25 ( Aphytis ). Tzamalis, NomKhron 17, 1998, p. 16, 43. Extremely rare. Struck in high relief and nicely toned. Nearly extremely fine.

From the "Collection sans Pareille" of Ancient Greek Fractions, ex Triton XIII, 5 January 2010, 97, Classical Numismatic Group MBS 69, 8 June 2005, 134 and Sternberg XIX, 18 November 1987, 110.

Gaebler, in AMNG, and Mary Comstock, in the BMFA catalogue, suggested that this type might, possibly, be from Asia Minor, but both Babelon, in the Traité, and Tzamalis suggest Aphytis, which is reasonable since a northern Greek origin seems certain.
