Description

CELTIC, Britain. Trinovantes & Catuvellauni. Cunobelin, circa AD 10-43. Unit (Bronze, 17.5 mm, 2.23 g, 3 h), 'Severed Head' type, Camulodunum. CVNO Sphinx crouching to right, with both her forelegs raised. Rev. CA-M Perseus, nude, standing to left, holding Medusa's severed head with his extended right hand and harpa with his left; in the lower field to right, altar. ABC 2987. BMC 2005. Van Arsdell 2198. SCBC 348. SCBI Mack 161 ( this coin. Rare and with unusual mythological imagery; a remarkably nice example with a superb apple-green patina. Good very fine.

From the Dr. Paul Peter Urone Collection, acquired from Leu Numismatics on 27 July 2005, ex Leu 86, 5 May 2003, 59 and from the collection of R.P. Mack, Glendining & Spink, 18 November 1975, 36, bought from Baldwin’s on 17 December 1969 for £ 140, and from the Harlow Temple Essex, find of 1969.
