Description

CILICIA. Tarsus. Caracalla, 198-217. (Bronze, 36.5 mm, 23.07 g, 12 h). AYT KAI M AVP CEYHPOC ANTΩNEINOC CEB / Π - Π Bust of Caracalla to left, wearing the crown and robes of a demiourgos priest; below bust, star. Rev. ANTΩNEINIANHC CEYH AΔP/ TAPCOY / Γ - B/ AM/K Nude athlete standing facing, head to left, holding a palm branch in his right hand and raising his left arm to crown himself with with a wreath in the form of a prize crown. Burrell p. 218. Cf. Klose 176 ( similar obverse and reverse )..SNG Levante 1064 ( this coin ). Dusty green patina. Minor scrape on the reverse, otherwise, very fine.

The reverse inscription means " (coin) of Antonine, Severan and Hadrianic Tarsos, first, biggest and most beautiful city of the province, ⟨and the city⟩ that presides over the province's three districts, and is the guardian of a temple of the Imperial cult ".
