Description

KORKYRA. Korkyra. Circa 300-229 BC. (Bronze, 16 mm, 3.69 g, 7 h), struck to commemorate the galley races held in honour of Poseidon, Dionysos or Apollo , under the magistrate So... or Phi.... ΠAΛΛAΣ Prow of galley to right. Rev. [K-O] Kantharos; above, bunch of grape bunch. BMC 272-273 var. Lindgren II 1462 ( this coin ). SNG Evelpidis 1918. Attractive mottled green patina. Some roughness, otherwise, very fine.

The name given on the obverse of this coin is not that of a magistrate but, rather, is the name of the winning galley - Pallas, one of the Titans, father of Zeus = Zeal, Nike, Kratos = Power, and Bia = Force.
