Description

CYPRUS. Uncertain mint. Circa 500-480 BC. Stater (Silver, 25 mm, 9.59 g). Bull kneeling to left; above, winged solar disk. Rev. Irrregular incuse square. BMC -. Cf. H. Dressel & K. Regling, Zwei ägyptische Funde ⟨Demanhur, IGCH 1637⟩ altgriechischer Silbermünzen, ZfN 37, 1927,p. 77, 134 and pl. II, 134. Destrooper-Georgiades -. Gemini I, 2005, 190 ( same dies, and also with a test cut ). Cf. J. Hirsch VII, 2 June 1902, 180. Tziambazis -. Zapiti & Michaelidou -. Extremely rare, apparently only known from the similar piece in Demanhur. Lightly toned. With a test cut and uncleaned deposits, otherwise, good very fine.

From the Collection of Jonathan H. Kagan.

This has been ascribed to Paphos, which is reasonable given the bull, but is certainly not conclusive. Considering that neither Dressel nor Regling was willing to ascribe their piece - similar but from different dies - to Paphos, preferring an uncertain mint, we see no reason to differ.
