This issue was often attributed to the obscure city of Golgi in the past, based entirely on the Cypriot syllabic letter 'go' or 'ko', which was thought to represent the initial of the city's name. More recent work has pretty much disproved this assumption, but, as usual, hasn't replaced it with anything better!
