LUCANIA. Sybaris. Circa 550-510 BC. Obol (Silver, 10 mm, 0.19 g, 7 h). [VM] Bull standing left, looking back. Rev. MV with four pellets around (one above and three below). HGC 1, 1235. HN III 1739. Perhaps an unpublished denomination ( tetartemorion ) for the mint. Surfaces somewhat grainy, otherwise, nearly very fine.
From the "Collection sans Pareille" of Ancient Greek Fractions, ex Münzen und Medaillen FPL 603, Christmas 1998, 4.
This coin is either an unusually light obol, weighing less than half what it should, or it is a tetartemorion, which appears to be an unrecorded denomination for Sybaris. However, HN III p. 145 notes that on the obols, there are often four pellets on the reverse, arranged just as they are here with one pellet above and three below. Thus, it is most probably that this coin is simply an extremely light weight obol.
