Description

★ Oikist Nomos from the Vlasto Collection, pedigreed to 1900! ★

CALABRIA. Tarentum. Circa 450-440 BC. Didrachm or nomos (Silver, 24.5 mm, 7.69 g, 5 h). Young man (Oikist - Taras), with hair cut short in the manner of an athlete, draped from the waist, seated to left on a diphros, and holding an upright spindle in his right hand and a long staff (a baktéria in ancient Greek) in his left. Rev. [TAPAΣ] Phalanthos, nude and with both of his arms stretched out to left, riding a dolphin swimming to left; below, scallop shell downwards. Fischer-Bossert 199d (V98/R142, this coin ) = Vlasto 203 ( this coin ). Nanteuil 81 ( this obverse die ). SNG Copenhagen 780 ( same dies ). A rare coin with an exceptional provenance. Good very fine.
