Description

SICILY. Syracuse. Second Democracy, 466-405 BC. Hemilitron (Bronze, 17 mm, 3.89 g, 3 h), by the engraver Phrygillos but unsigned, circa 410-405. Head of Arethusa to left, hair bound in sphendone. Rev. ΣΥ - ΡΑ Wheel with four spokes; in lower angles, two confronted dolphins. Calciati 19 fr4/7. HGC 2, 1479. SNG ANS 411. A wonderful piece with a delicate depiction of Arethusa. Attractive brown patina. Extremely fine.
