BRUTTIUM, The Brettii. Circa 214-211 BC. (Bronze, 22.5 mm, 5.39 g, 10 h), overstruck on a bronze from Tauromenion, often dated to the 2nd century BC, but clearly in error. Laureate head of Zeus to right; overstruck on a head of Athena to left, wearing a Corinthian helmet. Rev. [ΒΡΕΤ]-ΤΙΩΝ; overstruck on [ΤΑΥ]ΡΟ-ΜΕΝΙΤΑΝ Eagle standing to left, with spread wings; overstruck on Pegasos flying to left. HGC 1, 1366. HN III 1978-1981. SNG Copenhagen 1663-1675. Virzi pl. 71, 2054 ( this coin ). For undertype, CNS III, p. 225, 41 OS ( this coin ). HGC 2, 1580. Cf. SNG ANS 1152 ( different overstrike ). SNG Copenhagen 940. An interesting piece, clear and with a olive-green patina and an exciting pedigree. Some roughness and considerable traces of overstriking, otherwise, very fine.

From the collection of Gary Davies, and from the collections of T. Virzi, Malloy, 1 December 1980, 548, and E. Bissen, Ars Classica XII, 18 October 1926, 1045 (part), ex Hirsch FPL XVII, February 1907, 594.
