Description

IONIA. Uncertain. Circa 480-450 BC. Obol (Silver, 8 mm, 0.69 g). Corinthian helmet to left. Rev. Quadripartite incuse square. Rosen 109 ( Skione in Macedon ). SNG Kayhan 743 ( as uncertain Asia Minor ). Rare and enigmatic; nicely toned. Very fine.

This coin has been attributed in the past to Skione in Chalkidiki and to Neandria in Troas. It is still a mystery where it was originally struck.
