Description

ATTICA. Athens. Circa 393-355 BC. Tritetartemorion (Silver, 8.5 mm, 0.51 g, 9 h). Head of Athena with profile eye to right, wearing crested Attic helmet adorned with three olive leaves and palmette, round earring and pearl necklace. Rev. A-Θ-E framed by three crescents. HGC 4, 1668. Kroll 21b. SNG Copenhagen 58. Struck on particularly good silver, in contrary with the majority of the known examples. Good very fine.

Marks of value are rarely found on Greek coins, and in most cases they are indicated by the design. What we can see on the reverse of the present example are three crescents which are the three quarters of a complete moon. That is exactly what Tritetartemorion means: three times a quarter of an obol. Thus in this case, the reverse design informs the user of the coin's value.
