Description

IONIA. Phokaia. Circa 600-560 BC. Hekte (Electrum, 10 mm, 2.57 g). Female head to left, with a narrow hair band (?), long flowing hair, and an annular earring; behind, seal swimming downwards. Rev. Irregular incuse square. Bodenstedt –. Same dies as Numismatica Ars Classica 92 part 1, 23 May 2016, 216 and 'Prospero', The New York Sale XXVI, 4 January 2012, 520. Very rare. Of very attractive archaic style. Obverse struck slightly off-centre, otherwise, extremely fine.

Coins of this type were unknown to Bodenstedt: including this piece there seem to be four known, all from a single reverse punch linked to two very similar obverses.
