★ Rare Variety with an Excellent Portrait ★
Marius (AD 269). Antoninianus (AE, 20 mm, 2.18 g) c. spring AD 269, Trier mint.
IMP MARIVS P F AVG Radiate, draped and cuirassed bust of Marius right. / CONCORD MILITVM Clasped hands (upside down). RIC V.4, 483; RIC 6. Excellent portrait. A rare and interesting variety with the reverse type upside down. Nice dark patina. Extremely fine.
On the reverse die, the engaver of the coin legend made a mistake, with the effect that the clasped hands are depicted upside down. In the new RIC V.4, Mairat mentions this rare error on at least three reverse dies.
