Description

A LARGE ROMAN BRONZE SILENUS MASK APPLIQUE
Circa 1st-3rd century AD.
Mask applique of Silenus with highly expressive facial features. The companion of Dionysus is depicted with large, pointed ears, two tiny horns above the forehead, and a fillet of ivy along his bald pate. The almond-shaped eyes are deeply set below his furrowed, overhanging brow. He is shown with a wide snub nose and a thick beard and moustache. The back of the applique is filled with lead.
H 75 mm, Depth 38 mm (max.)
