Description

Byzantine Lead Seal Lustinianus I (527-565)

Obverse, bust of Lustinian I, frontal, with halo, without beard. Diadem with a helmet and trifolium and pendilia on its head. He wears khlamys fastened with fibula on his right shoulder.
Environment writing: [DNIVSTINIA] NVS PP [AVG]
D (ominus) n (oster) Iustinianus p (er) p (etuus) aug (ustus)

Back face, Winged Victoria standing front. Wearing Khiton. He holds the triumphal crown with double ribbons in his right and left hands. The cross in the lower right space.
Date: 527-565.
Perpetuus: ll from Probus. Perpetuus, which was used as the title of emperor until Leon; P was abbreviated as PERP or PP. PP is also short for patter patriae; however, since it is written augustus on the back here, it cannot be patriae.
There should also be a cross in the lower left cavity of the back, but the seal was broken.
Iustinianus was a devout Christian ruler and this is reflected in his seals. The cross was first imprinted on its seals, and its portrait on the seal is a halo. ll. The portrait of the lustinus is also hallowed in the seal, but later portraits of the emperors were haloless until the Palaiologos Period. (Seibt 1978: 59) Similar to the portrait of Iustinianus on this seal, it is also present on his coins, but it is haphazard. (BMC: 27, No. 17, Plate IV, No. 12; Sear 1987 No. 140). There is another type seal of Iustinianus, which has a monogram instead of a portrait on the obverse (Seibt 1978: No. 7). The same monogram is also present in the column headings of Hagia Sophia.
