Description

Sicily, Syracuse AR Tetradrachm. Time of Dionysios I, 405-400 BC. Unsigned dies in the style of Kimon and Euainetos. Charioteer, holding kentron in right hand and reins in both, driving fast quadriga to left; above, Nike flying to right, crowning charioteer with wreath held in both hands; dolphin to left in exergue / Head of Arethusa to left, hair bound by ampyx and net-like sphendone, wearing double-pendant earring; [ΣYPAKOΣIΩ] and four dolphins around. Fischer-Bossert, Coins 105 (V36/R72); Gulbenkian 299 (same dies); BMC 207 (same dies); SNG Lloyd 1408 (same dies); SNG ANS -; HGC 2, 1346. 17.69g, 25mm, 7h.
