Description

George III (1760-1820), gold Guinea, 1770, third laureate head right, Latin legend and toothed border surrounding, GEORGIVS. III. DEI. GRATIA., rev. crowned quartered shield of arms, date either side of crown, abbreviated Latin legend and toothed border surrounding, M.B.F.ET.H. REX. F.D.B. ET.L.D.S.R.I.A.T ET.E., 8.36g (Schneider -; Bull EGC 681 R3; MCE 375; Farey 1100 ER; S.3727). Worn on the high points with horizontal scratches across obverse, otherwise very fine and the rarest date for the type.

The Latin legends translate to on obverse "George the Third by the Grace of God" continuing on the reverse in abbreviated Latin which if in shown in full reads "Magnae Britanniae Franciae et Hiberniae Rex Fidei Defensor Brun et Lunebergen-sis Dux, Sacri Romani Imperii Archi-Thesaurius et Elector" and translates as "King of Great Britain, France and Ireland, Defender of the Faith, Duke of Brunswick and Luneberg, High Treasurer and Elector of the Holy Roman Empire."
Depsite the calendar year output being £623,779 worth of gold in 1770, the issue of Guineas dated 1770 must have been small as it is one of the hardest dates to find in the entire George III series.

Estimate: £ 1500 - 1700
