The Lion’s Mound is the most famous monument in Belgium. It was built between 1823 and 1826 as a marker on the spot where the Prince of Orange was injured by a musket ball to his shoulder during the Battle of Waterloo on 18th June 1815. The Prince lived and went on to become King William II of the Netherlands. The man-made hill is superseded by a cast iron lion sculpture, which faces geographically towards France. It was designed by Charles Vander Straeten as a symbol of the allied victory against Napoleon.
