Thomas Humphrey Paget OBE (1893-1974) was an extremely accomplished coin and medal designer whose career spanned more than 40 years. His works are some of the most iconic in recent British history, including the portraits and many of the reverse designs of George VI and Edward VIII. Though most of his designs were replaced during the reign of Elizabeth II, Paget’s last major contribution to coinage - still officially in use today - came in the form of this 1971 portrait of Prince Philip. Though ultimately not adopted for the official 1972 commemorative Crown, the design was revived in 2017 for a Five Pounds struck to commemorate the Prince’s retirement.
