† Stephen (1135-54), silver Penny, cross moline Watford type (c.1136-45), York mint, moneyer Authgrimr, crowned bust with sceptre right, omits inner circle, reads [STIEFN]E ---, rev. cross moline, lis in each angle, retrograde legend and beaded border surrounding, ЯIM OИ Ǝ[VER], 1.19g (BMC type I var; cf. SCBI 48 [Northern Museum], 1295-1298 ; N.873; S.1278). Toned, interesting in the omission of obverse inner circle and retrograde reverse legends, the usual dishing with some deposits. Slight rim chip otherwise good fine, rare.The legends translate as "Stephen King" on obverse and "Authgrimr of York" on the reverse.
