SEXTUS POMPEY. AR Denarius (3.83 gms), Massilia Mint; Q. Nasidius, commander of the fleet, 42-38 B.C. NGC EF, Strike: 4/5 Surface: 5/5. Fine Style.
Cr-483/2; CRI-235; Syd-1350. Obverse: Bare head of Pompey 'the Great' right; trident to right, dolphin below; Reverse: Galley with bank of rowers right, under full sail, helmsman steering rudder, hortator standing on prow; star to upper left. Only some off-centering prevents a full 5/5 strike designation, making this piece one of the more attractive, problem-free examples of the type which one will encounter. What little wear is present is even throughout and allows for great detail to remain, while the surfaces feature a great cabinet appeal. Assuredly of 'fine style' as its designation would indicate.
