Description

FRANCE. Franc a Cheval, ND (1350-64). Jean II (the Good). NGC MS-63.
Fr-279; Dup-294; Ciani-361. Weight: 3.85 gms. A decently struck and lustrous example with bold central devices while small areas in the peripherals shows some flatness. The legends are complete, but some letters are muddled making reading somewhat difficult. Overall a handsome example with attractive honey-gold patina throughout offering good eye appeal. John II faced multiple disasters unfolding in France at the time this coin was issued. The plague killed off nearly half the French population, while at the same time John found himself imprisoned in London, essentially held for ransom. Upon his release in 1360 and signing of the Treaty of Brétigny, France lost nearly a third of her territory to England.
Estimate: $2800.00- $3400.00
