Machin's Mills Halfpenny
1787 Machin's Mills Halfpenny. Vlack 19-87C, W-7940. Rarity-2. GEORGIVS III, Group III. AU-50 (PCGS).
A hard, tight example deeply and evenly toned overall in charcoal-copper. A few of the high points exhibit lighter sandy-brown toning, blush of rose-brown in the left obverse field. The strike is near-perfectly centered for one of these, and it is also exceptionally well executed with all design elements sharply to fully rendered. A trace of microroughness to the surfaces is easily overlooked, the in hand appearance generally smooth and free of worrisome blemishes. While Vlack 19-87C is among the more plentiful Machin's Mills halfpenny varieties in an absolute sense, the quality of the present example is seldom approached, and even more rarely exceeded. A highly desirable offering for both Machin's Mills variety specialists and PCGS Set Registry collectors.
