Description

Liberty Head Double Eagle
1851-O Liberty Head Double Eagle. AU-50 (PCGS).
An attractive, lemon-yellow example with richer peach shades across the high points. Soft near the borders due to refinishing of the die, the central elements remain bold on both sides. Heavily lustrous and free of any distracting abrasions. With the largest mintage in this Southern gold series, the 1851-O is the most plentiful New Orleans Mint twenty overall. Among the 750 or so believed extant from this original mintage of 315,000 coins, most are well worn and grade no finer than Choice EF. Given the rarity of Mint State survivors, this minimally worn AU example is sure to be of keen interest to the advanced collector.
PCGS# 8905. NGC ID: 268J.
From the Naples Bay Collection.
Estimate: $4000
