Description

Counterstamps

WARRANTED / H. BROWN / C.G. HAYES in serrated box punches on an 1818 Matron Head large cent. Brunk H-404, Rulau-Mav 22. Host coin About Good.

Listed in both Brunk and Rulau, but with no attribution as to who these two people were or what they did. Brunk and Rulau also have the middle initial wrong for the Hayes stamp. They lists four examples reported including this example. Odds are these are early carpenter stamps and are more than likely from manufacturers of woodworking tools such as block planes, hence the stamp of "Warranted". A second example, part of the four known.

From the Steve M. Tompkins Collection.

Estimate: $ 175
