Counterstamps
A. BELL in a serrated box punch on an 1841 Seated dime. Brunk B-512, Rulau-Unlisted. Host coin Fine.
Brunk lists one example on an 1819 large cent and Rulau lists a token that is probably a Betts fantasy piece that has the name A. Bell of Yonkers, NY incorporated within it. More likely, this is a silversmith or some other type of smith’s stamp due to its shape and size. Some time spent with city directories around the early 1850s should reveal its owner.
From the Steve M. Tompkins Collection. Earlier ex John J. Ford Jr.
