WOODSTOCK VT. in a box punch on an 1856 Braided Hair large cent. Brunk W-860, Rulau-Unlisted. Host coin Very Fine.
This is a silversmith’s location stamp which was used when making silverware, in conjunction with the maker’s name. A look through the marks of Woodstock, VT silversmiths should find a match for this well punched mark. One possible match is Roswell Hopkins Bailey (1804-1887) who worked as a silversmith and jeweler in Woodstock, VT from 1840 through the 1880s. Brunk lists an example on an 1837 large cent, so this is a new example.
