Description

Counterstamps

(star) (lion) (D) in box punches on an 1832 Matron Head large cent. Brunk-Unlisted, Rulau-Unlisted. Host coin Very Good.

These are the marks of John Lawson Westervelt (1826-1905), a silversmith operating in Newburgh, NY from 1848 to 1880s. He was listed at 146 Water Street in the 1864 directory. He apprenticed under Nicholas J. Bogert in 1839 and James Bogert to circa 1843.
