W.P. DEWITT / ELMIRA on an 1845 Braided Hair large cent. Brunk D-330, Rulau-NY 2026. Host coin Fine.
According to Brunk, William Price Dewitt (1814-1897) was a gunsmith working at 418 Water Street in Elmira, NY from 1848 to 1891. However, an obituary states that he was also a locksmith for sixty years. Brunk only lists four large cents reported with this stamp, including this example, while Rulau reports eight examples including this piece.
